Lead Acid vs Lithium-ion Batteries

Electricity is a vital part of our everyday lives. Energy can be created and stored in many ways, such as batteries. The two most common batteries are lithium-ion and lead-acid. These batteries have a large storage capacity, making them extremely popular.

What is a Lithium-ion battery?

Lithium-ion batteries are made from the metal lithium. These batteries have been designed to be recharged, making them reusable and resulting in a significantly longer life cycle than your lead-acid batteries.

Advantages:

Lithium-ion batteries are known to have a high energy density and can store more energy than any other battery without affecting its effectiveness. This battery is fast charging compared to other batteries.

Disadvantages:

These batteries can potentially overheat and become highly flammable. This is highly unlikely to occur, as this has only been reported a hand full of times. This makes it a small risk to consider.

What is a Lead Acid battery?

Lead-acid batteries are rechargeable batteries that are made from lead. They have a lower energy density compared to other modern batteries.

Advantages:

Lead-acid batteries are generally more affordable than lithium-ion batteries.

Disadvantages:

These batteries have a shorter lifespan and are significantly heavier due to the high lead content. Lead-acid batteries are considered to charge four times slower than lithium-ion batteries. Lead-acid batteries are suitable to use as an occasional power source.

So which battery is better?

When deciding between these two batteries, it is important to look at all the features of both batteries.

Cost is a crucial factor to consider whenever choosing between products. Lithium-ion batteries are more expensive but have a longer life span. Lead-acid batteries are more affordable but don’t last even half as long as lithium-ion batteries. With the important factors taken into consideration, lithium-ion batteries are a better investment to make when it comes to deciding between the two.
